Feel the Fear… and Take the First Step Anyway
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
There is a common misconception that courageous people are fearless.
They aren’t.
The women we admire—the ones who pursue their dreams, speak up for what they believe in, set healthy boundaries, change careers, start businesses, or step into leadership—aren’t necessarily free from fear. They simply choose not to let fear make their decisions.
That is courage.
As we begin this month’s theme, I want to encourage you with one simple truth:
Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is choosing to move forward even when fear is sitting beside you.
Confidence Gets You Ready. Courage Gets You Moving.
Last month, we focused on building unshakeable confidence.
Confidence is important because it helps us believe in ourselves, recognise our strengths, and trust that we have something valuable to offer.
But confidence alone doesn’t change our lives.
Action does.
There comes a moment when believing in yourself is no longer enough—you have to take the first step.
Perhaps you’ve been thinking about applying for that promotion, starting the business God has placed on your heart, having a difficult conversation, setting healthier boundaries, returning to your studies, or finally saying “yes” to an opportunity that stretches you.
Maybe you’ve been waiting until you feel completely ready.
The truth is, very few of us ever do.
More often than not, courage comes first—and confidence grows because we acted.
Small Steps Lead to Big Courage
We often imagine courage as one dramatic, life-changing moment.
In reality, courage is usually built through small, consistent decisions.
A courageous life is made up of everyday moments such as:
Speaking up when your opinion matters.
Asking for help when you need it.
Introducing yourself to someone new.
Saying “yes” to an opportunity that excites and scares you.
Taking one small step towards a dream you’ve been postponing.
Each brave decision reminds you that you are capable of more than fear would have you believe.
Don’t underestimate the power of one small step.
Small acts of courage create lasting transformation.
Three Ways to Start Building Courage Today
Start with Small Risks
You don’t need to make a dramatic life change overnight.
Choose one manageable step that stretches you just beyond your comfort zone.
Growth happens one decision at a time.
Acknowledge Your Fear
Fear isn’t something to be ashamed of.
Instead of pretending it isn’t there, name it.
Ask yourself:
“What am I really afraid of?”
Often, bringing fear into the light reduces its power.
Remember, bravery isn’t the absence of fear—it’s choosing not to let fear have the final word.
Take Action Before You Feel Ready
If you wait until every doubt disappears, you may never begin.
Many of the most rewarding experiences in life start with uncertainty.
Don’t wait for perfect confidence.
Take the first step, trusting that confidence will grow as you continue moving forward.
Coaching Reflection
Take a quiet moment and reflect on these questions:
What have I been postponing because I’m waiting to “feel ready”?
What is one fear that has been holding me back?
What is the smallest step I can take this week towards the life I want to create?
Write your answers down.
Sometimes clarity begins with honesty.
Fast Action Steps
This week, I invite you to put courage into practice.
✔ Do one thing that scares you.
Choose one small action you’ve been avoiding and commit to doing it within the next 24 hours. It doesn’t have to be a giant leap—it simply needs to move you forward.
✔ Start a Bravery Journal.
At the end of each day, write down one courageous thing you did, no matter how small. Over time, you’ll begin to see a pattern: you’re braver than you think.
✔ Celebrate Your Progress.
Don’t wait until you’ve reached the finish line to acknowledge your growth. Every brave decision deserves to be celebrated because each one strengthens your courage for tomorrow.
A Faith Perspective
Throughout Scripture, God rarely tells His people that they won’t experience fear.
Instead, He reminds them of His presence.
Joshua wasn’t called to be fearless.
He was called to be courageous because God would go with him.
The same is true for us today.
When God calls us to grow, He doesn’t ask us to walk alone.
He walks beside us, strengthening us with every step we take in faith.
So, whatever your first courageous step looks like this week, remember this:
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You don’t need to be fearless.
You simply need to be willing to take the next step.
Because often, the life you’re praying for begins with the courage to take one small step today.
Your Courage Challenge
What is one small act of courage you will commit to this week?
I’d love to hear from you. Share your commitment in the comments or connect with us on social media. Your story may be the encouragement another woman needs to take her own first brave step.
Remember: Small steps, taken consistently, create extraordinary transformation.
Own your dreams,
